At UGA Bands we understand that our high school colleagues across the state are tired and “Zoom-fatigued.” We get it! It’s been an exhausting year. And even though we can’t be together in person for our annual JanFest celebration, we still crave musical connection, inspiration, and interaction. We’d like to help.

This year, JanFest is one evening of fun, informative, and musically-enriching events that are virtual and offered to you as a “thank you” for all you are doing for your students. We are presenting a series of events in real time on Saturday, January 23, 2021, starting at 6:15pm. We hope that you will join us because we believe they will be fun and informative, but we also understand that you may want a virtual break. So, we will also record them and make them available for you to view at your leisure.

In addition to the events of Saturday evening we will also release a variety of webinars that you can use in your classroom and rehearsal room produced by our faculty colleagues in performance, musicology, theory, and composition here at UGA.  We will post links to live events and webinars on our website in January.

Schedule for Saturday

6:15pm Talk with Tim (A brief welcome by Dr. Tim Lauzenheiser followed by a ‘let’s get real’ chat with the man, the myth, the legend. Come prepared to ask Dr. Tim questions about anything from keeping students motivated, keeping yourself motivated, to the future of music education!)

7:00pm Hodgson Wind Ensemble and Friends Video Concert

8:00pm  “What Makes a Great Conductor Great?" (H. Robert Reynolds presents his findings after speaking with professional musicians around the country!)

9:00pm Salon Chat and Happy Hour with composers Jennifer Jolley and Alex Shapiro, soprano Lindsay Kesselman, and CJT

"JanFest” (pioneering band invitational established in 1950) is a four-day event for high school band musicians. Students are nominated for participation by their director by way of this website early in the academic year after receiving the JanFest announcement. UGA Bands staff selects students to participate based on the order of the director’s submission, the instrumentation need of the festival bands, and the reported musical achievements of each student. Typical festival attendance is approximately 1000 students from 130 schools.Directors and other adult chaperones accompany students to Athens for the event.

Directors are responsible for housing and food arrangements for their students.

The festival announcement includes a list of hotel properties in close proximity to the festival site.Students are placed in festival bands on the basis of an initial audition. These bands rehearse several times before a final performance on the final afternoon of the event. Attendees also enjoy several featured performances by guest high school bands and UGA student ensembles, including the UGA Hodgson Wind Ensemble. We’re looking forward to seeing you next winter at JanFest!
