UPDATED 3 APR 2020
Redcoat Band membership is open to any UGA student following a successful audition, the procedures for which vary by section and, in some cases, by intended major. With very rare exceptions, the band audition and admission process occurs in the winter and early spring prior to the member's first fall semester--before the UGA first-year and transfer admissions process is complete. Prospective members are urged to review the timelines for their area and promptly begin the application and audition process, regardless of whether they have received their official UGA acceptance.
Brass and Woodwinds
It is NOT necessary to be a Music major or minor to be a Redcoat! In fact, over 80% of Redcoat Band members major in a field other than Music. Because of the rigorous admission audition process for Music students, we accept the results of their major/minor auditions on marching band wind instruments for Redcoat Band membership. We evaluate students of other fields through an audition process that we hope accommodates their breadth of interests while assessing their likelihood to contribute to band performance.
Music Majors or Minors
Any undergraduate student who is accepted as a Music major or minor in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music on a marching band wind instrument is automatically accepted for Redcoat Band membership if they wish to participate. Those students should complete the Redcoat Band application, then email their intent to participate to Dr. Bawcum (email@example.com) before May 1 in order to be guaranteed a position in the following fall. A separate Redcoat Band membership audition usually is not necessary for these students.
Students who are accepted to the School of Music on an instrument that is not in the Redcoat Band instrumentation should contact Dr. Bawcum before April 1 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to make arrangements to discuss potential evaluation and placement.

- Ask your director or other music teacher to complete the recommendation form we email them.
Redcoat Band Percussion Auditions
Membership in the UGA Drumline (which includes battery and front ensemble) is usually determined by audition in the spring. The pandemic and related conditions have resulted in the following adjustments to the typical audition procedure:
- New members auditioning for Snare, Quads or Bass Drums are asked to submit a video audition by Saturday, April 25.
- An in-person audition will follow for veterans and new members who advance on Saturday, July 25th.
Redcoat Band Auxiliary Auditions
Membership in the Majorettes, Georgettes, and Flagline is determined by audition in April. 2020 auditions will be held TBA. The audition is open to current UGA students and those who have applied but have not yet been accepted to UGA.
