Audition Procedures

M.M. AND D.M.A. IN WIND CONDUCTING

  1. Apply to the University of Georgia Graduate School as soon as possible: grad.uga.edu
  2. Apply to the School of Music for admission and assistantship: music.uga.edu
  3. Submit (via "Acceptd" at https://app.getacceptd.com/ugamusic) the following pre-audition materials by December 1st:
    • Personal Statement of Purpose
    • Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)
    • Applicants for the DMA should submit a writing sample that demonstrates the applicant's ability to write analytically and formally about music—including discussion of such issues as style, form, performance practice, and/or other musicological topics. A paper that was completed during the candidate's MM degree or within another academic program would suffice. The writing sample should be 5–10 pages in length.
    • All graduate applicants should submit a short (500 word) reflective essay on one of the following topics.
      • Discuss your encounters with a composer of your choice and the impact their music has had on your development.
      • Discuss the relevance of live music in the 21st century.
      • Discuss the role of musicians in affecting the lives of others.
    • Three letters of recommendation including contact numbers and e-mail addresses of your recommenders
    • Video footage of both rehearsal and performance (10-15 minutes each; conductor facing view)
    • Audio recordings of at least 2 contrasting works performed by your own ensemble, or an ensemble you have conducted and rehearsed (approx. 20 minutes)
    • Repertoire list of works conducted and/or studied
  4. Interview and meeting (including philosophy of teaching/conducting/performance).
  5. Meeting with conducting faculty and graduate conductors.

You will be notified of the admission recommendation shortly thereafter. Final official acceptance and assistantship offers will come from the University.
